About the Biggar Science Festival

In 2017  a group of scientists, engineers and science enthusiasts in Biggar met and decided to trial a Science Festival.

Our aim was to inform, entertain, inspire, engage, and excite people of all ages, genders and backgrounds in the wonder of all areas of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).   Most importantly, we aim to educate people about science without making them think it is scary, difficult or "not for them" - everyone can enjoy and understand science to some degree.

Working with a large number of local groups and individuals we were able to engage with the community and reach out to major organisations. We provided a long weekend of public events, indoors and outdoors, in early October 2017.  Our first Festival received a hugely positive response from the community and schools and over 1,400 people of all ages attended.

The 2018 Festival comprised of even more events across the September long weekend and included a schools programme, field trips and “Science Kafe” talks for adults. Around 1700 people attended over the long weekend and the schools trips were enthusiastically received. The Science Kafes were so popular that a regular series of events was added to meet demand throughout the year.

2019 was bigger and better and attracted around 2500 people to the town for a very successful festival...

Then, as we were preparing for BSF 2020, a wee virus appeared and our plans went "oot the windae".    At first we decided to completely cancel the festival but as those strange early months of isolating and lack of contact wore on, we decided that we had to do something.   When evolved was a socially-distanced festival with a number of outdoor activities.   Our bags of science allowed our visitors to take home complete science experiments in a bag to complete in the safety of their own home.   A very toned-down affair, but a great success nontheless.

2021 followed in a very similar vein for obvious reasons.

Now, in 2022, we are back with a bang!   To keep things parts of the festival in very well-ventilated spaces, this year's festival is mostly going to be held in marquees at Loaningdale House, just outside Biggar.   We hope you can join us!

How can I get involved?

Our committee is always looking for new volunteers to help with all sorts of tasks from helping with events, sharing ideas and spreading the word.  We are passionate about keeping our events accessible and fun whilst still being educational.  Please contact us if you feel you could help us - even if it's just over the Festival period when we need Front of House and runners and photographers.
