Biggar

Biggar is a traditional market town with a rich scientific heritage, situated in rural Lanarkshire. Come and be curious about the world around us!​

  • Biggar sits at the watershed between the rivers Clyde and Tweed.

  • There is an  extremely rich and varied historical and archaeological heritage of Clydesdale's landscape - which can be explored in Biggar & Upper Clydesdale Museum and at Wanlockhead Mining Museum.

  • Biggar has the only preserved gasworks in Scotland, built in 1839 to provide gas for street lighting and domestic use. Here you can learn how gas was made from coal before the advent of natural gas in the 1960s.

  • Snowploughs have been designed and manufactured in Biggar since 1936.

  • An Impressive range of farming, engineering and high tech. companies have links with Biggar.

 

Easily accessed from Edinburgh via the A702, and around an hour from Glasgow via the M74, Biggar also enjoys good scenic road links with the Scottish Borders, Dumfries & Galloway and the south.
