A Revolution in Astronomy: the Vatican Observatory and the discovery of spectral lines

Some 160 years ago, Father Angelo Secchi began to look at the spectral lines of the sun and probe their secrets. This changed astronomy from plotting pinpoints of light in the sky to understanding the elements in stars and led to the discover of a new element, helium.
