Howie Firth tells the story of the remarkable Prince Rupert of the Rhine, great-grandson of Mary Queen of Scots, cavalry commander and admiral, metallurgist and printmaker, founding member of the Royal Society and first Governor of the Hudson's Bay Company.
Prince Rupert's cousin King James VII was the father of Bonnie Prince Charlie, and his youngest sister Sophia was the mother of King George I. He fought in Germany in the Thirty Years War, and the war in Germany in which many Scots soldiers of fortune also served led to the writing of the song 'My Love's in Germany' about one of them.
